iPhone upgrade plan redraws handset relationships

Apple on Wednesday unveiled an upgrade plan that lets customers trade up to the latest model every year, a move that threatens to frustrate the relationship between wireless carriers like Verizon and their subscribers.

In return for a monthly fee, starting at $32.41 for an entry-level iPhone 6S, customers will receive a new unlocked handset every year, which they can connect to a carrier of their choice. The price equates to the full, unsubsidised cost of a new iPhone split over 24 months, including AppleCare+ coverage, which offers technical support and insurance against some accidental damage.
