As Stephen Colbert declared in his opening monologue, his the rebooted Late Show would begin a search for the “real Stephen Colbert.” His days of The Colbert Report were behind him. His breakout tenure on The Daily Show even more so. The Late Show would be about discovering a new kind of Colbert-brand comedy. Almost.
Because it wouldn’t be the start of something new without a sendoff to the past, the now-retired Jon Stewart made a cameo appearance in Colbert’s Star Spangled-intro. Easy? Nostalgic? Buttering up our funny bones? All of the above. But yeah, the above was the perfect bridge. And now Stewart has his own Colbeard.
