Republicans on the House Benghazi Committee remain under attack by Hillary Clinton and her allies over allegations that their investigation is a partisan witch hunt.
But rather than wage a counteroffensive now, the GOP has hunkered down and focused on preparing for next week’s much-anticipated hearing with the Democratic front-runner.
The strategy, as described by staff working on the probe: “Tune it out” — and hold their fire for next week.
It’s a move that raises the stakes around Clinton’s appearance before the committee on Oct. 22. Republicans say their line of questioning will reveal new information about the deadly 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility and demonstrate their ability to stay above the political fray.
